1. Look up in Root Words
Look up "look" in root words, search result lists all root words that contain “look”, like “look after, look back, look around, etc.”
Look up in Root Words (with wild cards)
Mobysaurus automatically recognize wildcard characters * ? [ ] , so try a query like "*d???k"
Look up in Any Occurrence in the database
In this mode, the program will search the whole database for any occurrence of your queried word or words and list them, therefore it works a bit slower but returns much more comprehensive results. Sometimes your query generates more results than it's good for your eyes. In this case, Mobysaurus displays the first 30 results, and then you'll hear a beep from your PC speaker indicating "the game's not over yet". So after finished reviewing the first 30 results, you can press "Resume Search" in the menu bar or just F6 to continue to next page.
Look up in Any Occurrence (with wild cards) in the database
Same as above, only applies wild cards. Try a random query like "po*a*ment". Click a word shown on the sidebar will highlight it , paint it in red, and automatically scroll to its location.
Look up in Any Occurrence + Synonymous with
In this mode, the program will search the whole database for any occurrence of your queried word or words together with your designated synonym, and list the entries which simultaneously contain your query and the synonym. This function may sound tricky but indeed VERY powerful.
For example, if you wish to search synonyms for “stuff”, as in “bags stuffed with papers” but not in “don’t say such stuff”, it’s advised that you try “stuff” + synonymous with “crowd” or “cram”. Otherwise since “stuff” has multiple meanings, you eyes might be “stuffed” with some irrelevant “stuff”. So there's a way to limit your search in case you may feel a bit overwhelmed.
Look up in Any Occurrence (with wild cards) + Synonymous with
By applying wild cards in this search mode, you turn Mobysaurus into something like a crossword puzzle solver.
For example, "l??????" + "insect" returns "ladybug" as one of the results, and "lap dog" (insect of a person). And it might be proved useful if you cannot recall the exact spelling of a word but surely knows what it means. Try "o*x" + "straight" and you get "orthodox, onyx, ox, overtax", so it's "orthodox"? Sure.
